Edmonton Oilers

The St. Louis Blues have tendered offer sheets to Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway

In a bit of a strategic offseason chess match, the St. Louis Blues have targeted two Edmonton Oilers via the offer sheet system. Both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway have been tendered offer sheets, putting pressure on the Oilers to either saddle up and work out deals with their restricted free agents or lose them to the Blues in return for future assets.

Oilers offer sheeted

Both offer sheets tendered are two years, with the one to Broberg carrying a $4,580,917 cap hit, while Holloway’s carries $2,290,457. These cap hits may seem oddly specific, but they exactly line up with the offer sheet process and the compensation tiers for 2024.

With the NHL’s 2024 offer sheet compensation tiers, the Oilers would receive a second-round pick for Broberg and a third-round pick for Holloway. The Blues are using the offer sheets to their full capacity. By setting the cap hits at the maximum values before going into the next tier, they are both willing to take on these two players for relatively fair deals on short terms, while also forcing the Oilers to match this and possibly become more tight to the salary cap.

A new offseason deadline

The Oilers will now have seven days to settle their contracts with Broberg and Holloway. Targeting the Oilers via offer sheets was an offseason strategy that many teams could have jumped on. The Blues just did it first, and now the clock is ticking.
