With the 192nd overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers have selected Dalyn Wakely. The double over-ager centreman has been playing with the North Bay Battalion of the OHL.
Dalyn Wakely player profile
It was a big year for Wakely, who put up 104 points in 66 games this year for the Battalion. Not a small man, Wakely uses every bit of his 6-foot 190-pound frame.
| Season | Team | League | GP | G | A | P |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021–22 | North Bay Battalion | OHL | 67 | 20 | 14 | 34 |
| 2022–23 | North Bay Battalion | OHL | 66 | 30 | 19 | 49 |
| 2023–24 | North Bay Battalion | OHL | 66 | 39 | 65 | 104 |
Analyzing the pick
It’s a gamble to take a double over-ager, but Wakely has a ton of potential. He’s a battler, pushing hard for open pucks and isn’t afraid to get to the dirty areas of the ice. He throws hits left and right, without sacrificing his game as a creative playmaker. He does need to work on his skating and puck-handling, but the potential is there.
What’s next for Wakely
Wakely has played his 20-year-old season in the OHL this year and likely goes to the AHL or ECHL next season. He does need to do a lot of work on his skating, but if he can smooth out some of his bumps, he could be a player in a few years.
