Edmonton Oilers Prospects Roundup: Nearly playoff time for Bakersfield, Stefan keeps rolling in the WHL

The Edmonton Oilers have prospects still rolling in the CHL playoffs. Really good news for the Portland Winterhawks in their best-of-seven series right now, but really not good news for the Ottawa 67’s in their series right now.

The Bakersfield Condors played one game, and have just three remaining games in their season. They are playoff bound, but their opponent is still not set yet.

Maxim Beryozkin is just days away from starting the Gagarian Cup playoffs. He has been outstanding this season and has been particularly impressive in the playoffs.

There is so much to get into this week- let’s dive right in!

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age. All data is from EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis) which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

AHL

  • The Condors played just one game this week, picking up a 3–2 overtime victory over the Pacific Division leading Coachella Valley Firebirds.
  • Carter Savoie, Philip Kemp, and Philip Broberg had the goals for the Condors, with Kemp notching his second goal of the season.
  • Savoie and Broberg both had two points, with each earning a secondary assist in the game.
  • Olivier Rodrigue finished with 30 saves on 32 shots, and was very good in the appearance.
  • The Condors are bound for the AHL playoffs and have jut three games remaining. They face the Ontario Reign mid-week then have a back-to-back against the Henderson Silver Knights.
  • Bakersfield sits sixth currently but could finish as high as fourth or as low as seventh. If the playoffs started today, they would face the Ontario Reign in the first round. Ontario holds the edge in the season series by a 3–2 margin.

ECHL

  • A goal for Carl Berglund in the ECHL this week. He continues to look very good for Fort Wayne, and likely deserves a look at the AHL level.
  • An assist for Jake Chiasson in the ECHL as well. He’s been fine.

Europe

  • No games for the Oilers’ European players this week. Their seasons are now done.

NCAA

  • All of the prospects in the NCAA are finished for the season.

OHL

  • Brady Stonehouse and the Ottawa 67’s are down 3–0 in their second round matchup to the Oshawa Generals. Stonehouse has no points so far in the second round.

Russia

  • The Gagarian Cup finals kick off this week and Maxim Beryozkin’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl will be hoping to take home the championship.
  • Beryozkin sits second in playoff points this season with 14 points in 16 games, and leads his team in points.

WHL

  • The Portland Winterhawks are demolishing the Everett Silvertips, holding a commanding 3–0 series lead. They won their first two games by a combined score of 14–3, and narrowly beat the Silvertips 4–3 in overtime in the third game.
  • James Stefan currently has 11 points in seven games for the Winterhawks, and leads his team in this department. He also sits fourth in the league in playoff scoring.
