Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 72: McDavid temporarily took lead in NHL scoring race as Edmonton routs Anaheim

The Edmonton Oilers are still chasing the Vancouver Canucks for first place in the Pacific Division. They’ve been second for quite some time now as the Canucks haven’t dropped enough for the Oilers to overtake. However, another area of the game that Edmonton had a lead on was for a fleeting moment in time, they had the league’s leading scorer in Connor McDavid.

As Edmonton scored six goals against the Anaheim Ducks, McDavid’s three points put him first in the NHL with 125 points. It wasn’t until later games from the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning that Nathan MacKinnon and Nikita Kucherov‘s multi-point games put them back in first and second overall. For now, McDavid sits at third again, but he’s red-hot and has games in hand.

Charts and observations from the game are below!

Game events

  • The Oilers have dominated the Ducks over the past few seasons and this game was no different. Edmonton potted six goals with a three-goal first period setting the tone.

  • Adam Henrique scored his second goal in as many games, but this time scoring against his former team is probably a lot more memorable.
  • Zach Hyman is now up to 52 goals on the season with his third period marker.
  • For the second game in a row, the Oilers lost a shutout bid late in the third, this time Calvin Pickard was beaten as Alex Killorn scored on the power play. This one stings a bit for Edmonton as Anaheim was 1-for-26 over their past 10 games on the man advantage.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers were dominant throughout the game as there were long stretches of play to open all three periods where the Ducks couldn’t muster hardly any shots at all.
  • Both teams scored one power play goal in a game that was mostly played at even strength.
  • The Oilers were once again very good at playing for the high-danger shots. They completely dominated in the offensive zone as the majority of their shots were in the slot and they got the goals to prove it.
  • The Ducks were stymied for much of the game as they were kept to the outside and hardly any slot shots were taken.

5v5 Corsi

  • Throughout the game, the Oilers played as if they didn’t have the lead at all. They didn’t take any breathers as they kept pressing consistently for the full 60 minutes.
  • Their 5v5 Corsi was consistent from start to finish as they took advantage of a weaker team that couldn’t contain them.
  • The Oilers were good on both ends of the ice as again, they had a plethora of shots in the net-front areas while they didn’t give up much of anything themselves.
  • Pickard was perfect at 5v5 as he stopped everything that made it to him.
