Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 57: Hyman powers Edmonton past Blues, McDavid snaps goalless drought with overtime winner

The Edmonton Oilers were hungry to get back to their winning ways. Since their 16-game win streak, they haven’t won three consecutive games in a row. They started their five-game homestand on the wrong foot, losing three straight, but finished strong with two wins—the latest coming against the St. Louis Blues.

The game featured a few major milestones for several Oilers to boot.

Charts and observations from the win are below!

Game events

  • It was a high-event game across many fronts, with the two teams combining for 69 shots and 61 hits.
  • The Blues tripled up the Oilers on blocks 24–8, which would have otherwise made the shot differential much heavier in Edmonton’s favour instead of just the +1.

  • The Blues came to play as they scored two quick goals early in the first period. The second goal came from Pavel Buchnevich, a player the Oilers are reportedly interested in.
  • The Oilers answered back with Zach Hyman scoring two goals to bring his total on the season to 40 goals.
  • Connor McDavid assisting on both goals meant he scored 25 consecutive assists before snapping his goalless drought with the overtime winner.
  • Also on Hyman’s goal, Evan Bouchard’s assist makes for 57 points on the season for the defender, the highest total by an Oilers defenceman since Paul Coffey’s 67 back in 1986–87.

All situations Corsi

  • The game’s first two power plays saw quick goals for each team.
  • The Oilers biggest issue in terms of shot pressure was literally just their start. After the Blues got ahead 2–0, the Oilers answered back and dominated the shot pressure.
  • Interestingly, the other power plays barely saw any shot attempts for either team.
  • The Oilers continue to dominate in terms of shot efficiency. They’re the best team in the league to play this style of hockey and it continues to be a high-return investment for the team to adopt these systems.
  • Edmonton was good at preventing the Blues from getting too many high-danger shots at all, instead forcing St. Louis to shoot from all over the offensive zone and not challenging Stuart Skinner.

5v5 Corsi

  • Since much of the game was played at 5v5, this chart is similar to the above one.
  • The number of slot chances the Oilers had in the game is highly impressive. The fact that only got one goal to show for it feels unlucky.
