Going undefeated in an entire month is no small feat, which is what Edmonton Oilers’ goaltender Stuart Skinner did in January. In recognition of his performance, he was name the NHL’s second star of the month.
An undefeated January for Skinner and the Oilers
Skinner went 9–0–0 with a .953 SV%, and 1.33 GAA in the month. Beyond the counting stats, Skinner had a save percentage 4.38% above expected, leading to 15.82 goals saved above expected during January, bringing his season total to an impressive+12.04 GSAx per Evolving Hockey.
The Oilers’ starter is also riding a personal 12-game win streak, which is a franchise record and is a feat that has only been achieved by nine other goaltenders in league history. The Oilers have had a softer schedule of late, but the team’s skaters have not always been on top of their game, and Skinner has kept them in hockey games, notably including his recent starts against Nashville and Columbus.
Skinner will likely look to make it 13 in a row as the Oilers set to tie the all time winning streak record on February 6, when Edmonton will visit Las Vegas to take on the Golden Knights in a game that has massive implications for records, the Pacific Division standings and settling last year’s playoff scores.
