Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 45: Edmonton takes down Nashville to extend win streak to 16

The Edmonton Oilers had one game remaining before their bye week. Win, and extend the win streak to 16 games to tie the second-longest streak in NHL history; lose, and head into the break with a loss. Well, the Oilers opted for the former and continued their winning ways right into the All-Star break.

Charts and observations from the win are below!

Game events

  • Edmonton’s shot totals were quite low all things considered. The team is third in the NHL with 33.8 shots per game, so putting up just 21 is surprising.
  • It was a physical battle as both teams racked up 28 hits.

  • The Oilers getting two power play goals as the only two goals in the first two periods was a big relief for them, and getting that third goal was timely as the Predators had a third period push that only saw one goal.
  • Essentially, the Oilers didn’t play their best hockey, but they didn’t have to with the goals they got in the game.

All situations Corsi

  • The Oilers didn’t have any prolonged offensive zone time, whereas the Predators had a couple of instances, mainly surrounding their first power play of the second period, as well as their third period comeback attempt.
  • Edmonton’s shot attempts totalled under 50 while the Predators had almost 70—this is a pretty stark differential for the Oilers in any game.
  • The Predators were actually all over the Oilers in this game as it was won by Edmonton thanks to the outstanding play in net by Stuart Skinner.
  • The Oilers didn’t have their usual spray of high-danger shots as their offence actually didn’t look quite as effective as other games during this win streak.

5v5 Corsi

  • At 5v5, the Oilers actually held the edge for most of the game, but there were no instances of 5v5 dominance but rather just a team playing to get to the break.
  • The shot locations at 5v5 were not in Edmonton’s favour at all. The team was not effective with their shots and barely tested Kevin Lankinen.
