The Edmonton Oilers announced today that Dylan Holloway has been activated from long-term injury reserve. In a subsequent move, the forward was assigned to the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL.
Holloway has been out since November 13, when he injured his knee in the Oilers’ home game against the Islanders. The Oilers placed him on LTIR on November 15, designating at the time as week-to-week, missing a total of 22 games before he was activated.
Holloway’s season
In 14 games with the Oilers this season, Holloway had 1 goal, 13 penalty minutes, and a -3 rating. His advanced metrics look better, with an on-ice 61.28% expected goal share, 57.75% shot share, and 60.61% scoring chance share that was sunk by a .937 PDO.
The move takes the Oilers out of LTIR, with Holloway’s 925K cap hit being fully absorbed by his assignment to the AHL. The 21-man roster currently has $719,169 in cap space to the 83.5 million dollar cap ceiling and will now start to accumulate cap space daily that can be used at a later date.
The Condors play on January 3rd, 5th, and 6th, potentially allowing Holloway to play 3 games in the AHL while missing just one game at the NHL level. Bob Stauffer reported during last night’s post-game that the Oilers would use this assignment as a conditioning stint for the 22-year-old forward, who likely sees usage at center with the recent emergence of Ryan McLeod as a top-6 winger.
There is no doubt that Hollaway will be back with the team at some point this season, but for now, AHL time makes the most sense for the team on a six-game winning streak and the player.
