When the Edmonton Oilers capped off their last game before the Christmas break, they scored four goals in the third period to nab a win over the New York Rangers. That game marked two back-to-back games with four-goal third periods for the Oilers. Well, they got right back into action with a four-goal first period against the San Jose Sharks for a total of eight goals over two periods of total action.
Over the course of the game, five different Oilers scored. Only the first goal was needed, however, as the Sharks were shut out on home ice. The game-winning goal came just one minute into the game.
Looking at the charts, the Oilers weren’t as effective with their offensive play, but their goals came aplenty. In other games, the Oilers would rack up the majority of their shots in the high-danger areas, i.e. the slot, and while they did get shots off in between the faceoff circles, it didn’t come at their usual volume. However, Edmonton still bested rookie goaltender Magnus Chrona to spoil his first NHL start and he was replaced after the first period.
On the flip side in their own end, the Oilers actually gave up a decent amount of high-danger shots. But fortunately, Stuart Skinner was sharp and picked up his second shutout of the season. Interestingly, both shutouts for Skinner came in 25-save efforts.
The Oilers moved to 16–15–1 and leapfrogged the Calgary Flames in the standings with the win.
