NHL weekly trade rumours: finding an answer for the Edmonton Oilers goaltending situation

These rumours are the ones we’ve heard about from the last week and from the weeks before. I’ve added some tidbits in there that may hint to future trades. This will be mostly Edmonton Oilers based as that’s where the majority of the action seems to be headed towards

Is the Oilers goaltending problem nearing its resolution?

Based on how the talks have been going on through Edmonton, it sounds like the Oilers goaltending is nearing its destination in terms of closure/resolution and it may even be internal, if all cards are played right.

  • During the second intermission of the Oilers game against the New York Islanders, Oilers top reporter and the star of Edmonton’s radio show “Oilers Now” explained that Oilers top goalie prospect, Olivier Rodrigue, would be getting two of the three starts during the game. He hinted at Rodrigue getting a call up to the NHL depending on how Rodrigue does during the games.
  • Surprisingly, Rodrigue got all three of the starts during this span (Jack Campbell was sick for the third game). Rodrigue won two of the three starts he stole both of them. In those two games, he made over 35+ saves with some in the high quality variety. The Bakersfield Condors did not play well in those games but Rodrigue did. He pulled off two great wins and was spectacular. In the game he lost, he was still solid but not good enough to pull off another steal.
  • I believe Ken Holland and Jeff Jackson are now thinking long and hard of if they will give Rodrigue a start. I will say that he will be called up after Christmas.
  • On Oilers Now, before Edmonton’s game against the New York Rangers on Friday, Bob Stauffer and Frank Seravalli discussed if the Oilers were going to try making a blockbuster move. Seravalli said that the Oilers HAVE to make a big move because of the situation arising with Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid. They have to do everything possible. Stauffer agreed and also said could it involve two first-round picks and Seravalli agreed with him. It sounds like, if the Oilers keep this good streak of wins up, they may be headed towards a trade that may involve more than a goalie.
  • Stauffer has been talking about the Oilers acquiring a top-six RW scoring winger who has term along with a goaltender. I’m not sure which forwards he is eluding to, but since the scouts have been watching Columbus, Montreal and Nashville extensively, I believe it may involve them.
  • Stauffer also said that the Oilers goaltending situation will be resolved by the end of January and we may see more additions by early February.
  • I will take a guess and say the Oilers will acquire Elvis Merzlikins (if the Oilers don’t want to rush Olivier Rodrigue) and either Alex Texier or Boone Jenner.

What is coming?

I think Olivier Rodrigue will be called up for New Years and, if it doesn’t go as well as the management hopes, we will see moves happening near the end of January.
