Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 30: Third period outburst secures win over Devils for Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers looked to prevent a four-game losing skid as they faced off against the New Jersey Devils. It’d be a tough go to enter their last game before the Christmas break tonight against the New York Rangers with a lengthy losing streak. Fortunately, that won’t happen as the Oilers got the much-needed win.

The Oilers started the game with two early goals in the first six minutes of the game. They tried to extend their lead but were unable to. Instead, the Devils answered back with three goals of their own to give Edmonton a one-goal deficit heading into the final frame.

Luckily (or skillfully) for Edmonton, the visiting team would end up scoring four unanswered goals in the third with three straight goals in the first three minutes of the period. Edmonton outright dominated the third and it paid off. Staying out of the penalty box also helped their case. They snapped their losing skid and now have a chance to enter the break with some momentum built up if they can string together another win tonight!

Looking at the shot location plot below, it’s impressive to see how all of the Oilers’ goals came from in close, as they barely even any shots at all from the blue line. They fought for higher-efficiency shots and earned their goals. Doing it all at 5v5 is even more impressive.
