Oilers Visual Recap 21: Edmonton ekes out shootout win after giving up two late goals in third period

The Edmonton Oilers faced off against the Vegas Golden Knights in a litmus test type of game. With Vegas falling back down to earth after their start and Edmonton trending up, it was a game that had turning point potential for the Oilers if they could find a way to win it.

Things got off to a good start as the Oilers scored first on a Sam Gagner goal. The Golden Knights answered early in the second, but Connor McDavid put up three points in the middle frame to give the Oilers a solid 4–2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Since the Golden Knights played the night prior down in Calgary with the game going into overtime, the Oilers had a great opportunity against a tired Vegas team to shut things down for the win. Unfortunately this didn’t happen smoothly as Vegas scored twice in the third to force overtime.

The extra frame didn’t solve anything, but two shootout-opening goals from McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins secured the win for the Oilers, marking their third win in a row.
