Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 19: Skinner picks up shutout as Edmonton cruises past Capitals

The Edmonton Oilers bounced back from a three-game losing streak with a resounding 5–0 victory over the Washington Capitals. The standout performances came from the usual suspects, with Leon Draisaitl leading the charge by scoring two goals and an assist. Connor McDavid was back with his playmaking with four assists—marking his first four-point game of the season.

In the net, Stuart Skinner delivered a stellar performance, stopping all 25 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season. Skinner’s rebound from a disappointing game against the Carolina Hurricanes earlier in the week was pivotal for the team.

Offensively, the Oilers found their rhythm, particularly on the power play, where they capitalized on three out of four opportunities. This marked a significant improvement for Edmonton, breaking a cold streak on the man advantage during their road trip.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also contributed to the offensive surge, registering three points with a goal and two assists. Evander Kane added to the scoring with a goal of his own, and defenseman Evan Bouchard chipped in with a power play goal.

Defensively, the Oilers tightened up their play, limiting the Capitals to 25 shots on goal. The team’s commitment to defensive responsibilities, combined with Skinner’s solid goaltending, resulted in the first shutout of the season for Edmonton. While the Capitals did get shots in high-danger areas as seen in the charts below, they were still limited in overall chances all game long as the Oilers were relentless on offence, almost doubling up on 5v5 shot attempts.

The victory was a crucial turning point for the Oilers, providing a much-needed boost of confidence. All charts from the massive win are below!
