Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 18: First period drubbing from Carolina kept Edmonton down and out

The Edmonton Oilers suffered a challenging 6–3 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes set the tone with a flurry on offence, scoring four goals in a rapid 5:31 span during the first period. Despite Zach Hyman‘s two goals and a shorthanded contribution from Mattias Ekholm, the Oilers couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

Goaltender changes occurred for both teams, with Antti Raanta leaving for precautionary reasons, and Stuart Skinner being leaving because he was, well, not good. Pyotr Kochetkov and Calvin Pickard came into the game for their respective teams.

Hyman scored his 10th goal of the season, narrowing the gap to 5–3 in the third period. However, the Hurricanes didn’t cede any more goals and sealed the game with Brent Burns‘ empty-net goal.

Charts from the setback are below. Looking at the Corsi charts and the locations, it’s clear that Carolina completely dominated the first period. The teams were relatively even in the second, but Edmonton pushed in the third. However, it was too little too late.

Edmonton’s offence was able to score from in close, but their defence and goaltending was horrid and it cost them the game. They enter American Thanksgiving with a 5–12–1 record.
