The Edmonton Oilers are making roster transactions in their few days without games between the Heritage Classic and their next game against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

Oilers roster moves

Looking to swap out some of their depth forwards, the team tended to a series of transactions that enabled them to get their roster in order.

Adam Erne waived

They first waived Adam Erne for the purposes of reassignment to the AHL. After signing a one-year contract, Erne featured in six games, scoring zero points. If he goes unclaimed he’ll be reporting to the Bakersfield Condors.

Sam Gagner signing and call-up

Then Jay Woodcroft confirmed that the team was going to call up Sam Gagner and get him signed to an NHL deal. Gagner was with the Oilers during training camp on a professional tryout but eventually signed a deal to play in the AHL with the Condors.

To bring up Gagner, the Oilers also need to tend to his NHL contract, and early details are as follows:

A one-year deal with an NHL salary of $775K and a minors salary of $250K.

Gagner’s last game as an Oiler came all the way back in 2019–20, where he played in 36 games with the club. Since then, he played three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and one season with the Winnipeg Jets.

So far this season in Bakersfield, Gagner has put up one goal and four assists in three games.

We’ll see how Gagner does with Edmonton in what will mark his third stint with the team since being drafted by the Oilers back in 2007.
