Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 7: Edmonton shut out by visiting Rangers, losing streak extended

The Edmonton Oilers faced off against the New York Rangers at Rogers Place on Thursday night, hoping to turn their season around. However, they were unable to find the back of the net entirely as they suffered a 3–0 defeat, extending their losing streak to four games. The Oilers now hold a 1–5–1 record for the 2023–24 NHL season.

The game started off with a scoreless first period, with both teams having their chances, but the goaltenders—Jonathan Quick for the Rangers and Stuart Skinner for the Oilers—stood tall to keep the game level. One of the highlights of the period was a remarkable right-pad save by Stuart Skinner on Filip Chytil in the final minute.

In the second period, the Rangers broke the deadlock with a power play goal at 3:32, courtesy of Adam Fox. The Rangers continued to build their lead when Braden Schneider managed to keep a back pass in at the blue line, launching a long shot that beat Skinner high to the stick side at 12:03.

With less than two minutes left in the second period, Alexis Lafreniere extended the Rangers’ lead. Artemi Panarin, who was having an impressive night, delivered a long pass to Lafreniere, who unleashed a one-timer that beat the Oilers’ goalie.

In the third period, the Oilers pushed hard to get back into the game, outshooting the Rangers 11–4. However, Jonathan Quick, who made 29 saves in the game, thwarted their efforts. He made a crucial glove save to deny Zach Hyman with seven minutes to play, preserving his shutout.

Despite some late-game drama where it appeared the Rangers had scored again, it was overturned after a review. The Oilers couldn’t find a way to solve Quick for any parts of the game while continuing to contend with the absence of Connor McDavid, who remained sidelined with an upper-body injury.

The Oilers will look to turn their fortunes around as they prepare to face the Calgary Flames in the 2023 Heritage Classic on Sunday at Commonwealth Stadium. This Battle of Alberta will see two struggling teams trying to end October on a high note.
