Oilers Game Recaps

Oilers Visual Recap 2: Edmonton’s home opener spoiled by Canucks

In their home opener, the Edmonton Oilers outshot the Vancouver Canucks 40–16 but fell short with a 4–3 defeat. They started Stuart Skinner instead of Jack Campbell. Neither goalie had particularly good performances in the season opener, but it was still a positive change that should have given the Oilers a good reset.

The Oilers started strong, with Leon Draisaitl scoring just 42 seconds into the game. However, the Canucks came back with two deflected goals to take a 2–1 lead. The game was tied at 3–3 after two periods, but Sam Lafferty‘s early third-period goal secured the win for the Canucks.

Despite their dominant shot advantage, the Oilers couldn’t find the needed goals. Casey DeSmith‘s stellar performance in the Canucks’ goal with 37 saves played a significant role in their victory. The Oilers had a good-looking power play as well—converting twice on the man-advantage. Despite the improvements, they just had a game stolen where goaltending was the major storyline. The visiting goalie was good, but the home goalie was not.

Good news is that after two games, the Oilers were able to triple their goal output and halve their goals against. The bad news is the Oilers were only able to triple their goal output and halve their goals against…
