With hockey leagues around the hockey world entering playoff mode, so will the Edmonton Oilers, Bakersfield Condors, and Fort Wayne Komets. Forwards David Lewandowski and Maxim Beryozkin are also in the middle of their respective playoff runs.
There are also new faces in Bakersfield with William Nicholl and Tommy Lafreniere making their pro debuts this past week.
Let’s take a look at everything within the Edmonton Oilers system from the past week.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2001 or later.
Maxim Beryozkin, Forward, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv
With Beryozkin’s KHL contract set to expire, it’s expected that the 2001-born forward will sign with the Edmonton Oilers this offseason. In the 2025 version of the Oilers prospect rankings, the Russian forward was ranked the third-best prospect in the system.
The 2020 draftee is one of the oldest prospects within their system, but has put together a steady resume in the KHL since being drafted, despite the down 2025–2026 campaign. He brings a grown man’s power-oriented game with a physical edge, decent play connection ability, and hustle with every shift.
His main elements that might limit his game are his janky skating mechanics/speed and questionable hockey IQ. Beryozkin himself is not much of a playmaker, but his puck skills will aid play articulation and connection with the soft-skill guys by getting plays in deep or around the net.
Beryozkin’s long-term projection with the Oilers
Much like many of their recent undrafted free agents, he likely has a ceiling as a third- or fourth-line forward, who will inject some youth into their lineup. He plays a low-risk, low-reward game that shows some sparks, but his hockey sense and skating will provide notable gaps in his play on North American ice.
That being said, the Oilers have been searching for his exact type of power-forward play, and he should be a solid all-around complementary player. The prospect pool for the Oilers is not that deep, but to expect Beryozkin to come in and be a “top-six star” would be setting hopes too high.
Overall, yes, the Oilers should sign Beryozkin as he is free, NHL-ready right now, and projects as a gritty bottom-six NHL forward for years to come.
Edmonton Oilers prospect updates
AHL
- The Condors went 2–1–0 this past week with a 5–2 victory against Tuscon on the 8th, and a 5–2 win against San Diego on the 10th. Bakersfield’s sole loss came on the 11th in a rematch against the Gulls, where they fell 7–3.
- Bakersfield also clinched an AHL playoff spot this past week and is looking to build more momentum as they finish their regular season on the 18th and heads into the playoffs.
- CHL prospects William Nicholl and Tommy Lafreniere have both joined the Condors and have both found the AHL scoresheet in their young careers.
- Forward Isaac Howard was recalled to the Oilers on the 12th. Goaltender Connor Ungar was called up to Bakersfield from Orlando, so expect Pickard to be called up to the Oilers for the playoffs.
ECHL
- Fort Wayne had a solid week going undefeated, with a 3–0–0 record. The Komets collected a pair of wins against Kalamazoo on the 10th (5–1), and 11th (6–2), and finished the week beating rival Toledo 5–4 on the 12th.
- Fort Wayne has now reclaimed first place in the ECHL’s Central Division, and even has a game in hand on Toledo. The Komets’ overall record is 43–16–10, with three games left in the season.
- Josh Bloom, Brady Stonehouse, Nathaniel Day, and Samuel Jonsson are all Oilers-affiliated prospects ready for ECHL playoff action. There has been no mention of when forward prospect James Stefan is returning to the lineup.
NCAA
- No Oilers-affiliated prospects have entered the transfer portal this year.
WHL
- Lewandowski and the Saskatoon Blades are in the middle of the second round of WHL playoffs, down 3–0 against the Prince Albert Raiders. All of Saskatoon’s offence has been stifled in the second round, including Lewandowski’s size and skill combo.
Russia
- Maxim Berryozkin and the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv are cruising into the third round of the KHL playoffs after sweeping Salavat Yulaev Ufa this past week. Yaroslavl Lokomotiv only gave up two goals in their entire second round series.
