Edmonton Oilers Prospect Update: Beau Akey, a top prospect is back on track

The Edmonton Oilers have a new face in the form of Tristan Jarry, and so do the Bakersfield Condors. The Condors actually have a couple of new faces as it’s been a busy week for the AHL affiliate of the Oilers with call-ups and trades. Many leagues are on pace to begin their holiday break, and World Junior training camps are set to start.

A busy week in the minor leagues, and a not-so busy week everywhere else. Let’s take a look.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.

Beau Akey, D, Bakersfield Condors

There is no question about it, Beau Akey has had some rough breaks, with injury trouble early in his major junior career, to uncertainty in his young professional hockey career. Well, the young defender got one good bounce earlier this season, when Troy Stecher got claimed on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

This opened up a defenceman spot for the Condors, which is an opportunity the former WJC Team Canada rearguard has taken and not looked back at.

A rocky couple of years

Akey’s had a rocky road lately. The defender had a slower return from injury last season than anyone would like, while also lacking his traditional production, and an assignment to the ECHL at the beginning of this year. For some, the word regression was starting to creep into Akey’s description.

Then the call back up to Bakersfield happened.

A bounce back season so far

Akey has started to look more dynamic in his short stint with the Condors in this 2025–26 season, and this is defined by his return to top end skating, rejuvenation of his puck management, and increasing confidence in his own senses.

With Bakersfield, Akey has averaged 17:17 of TOI, with most games having him reach the 20-minute mark. This means he does not have to worry about his spot in the lineup as he’s been a consistent third pairing defender.

Additionally, the 2023 second rounder has returned to form as a puck mover with him initiating 5.3 breakouts per game, securing 3.3 direct zone entries per game, and making 32 passes (with a solid 87% accuracy).

He’s also back to being a power play asset, with 1:04 per game of special teams time. Not only special teams but the Canadian defender is also seen as an offensive weapon by Coach Chaulk, with him starting 90% of his shifts in the offensive zone.

Physicality is still an adjustment, but it is for any 20-year-old playing against grown men. However, Akey is still physically engaging in puck battles, having mixed, but not awful results, and routinely isolating and stripping attackers of pucks to the tune of seven take aways per game.

Don’t panic, development in progress

Yes development is going to take time, but Akey looks to be back on track as he’s building more confidence and refining his skill with every week in the AHL.

Akey is back on track to be that familiar smooth-skating facilitator with a physical side that the Oilers drafted back in 2023.

Edmonton Oilers prospect updates

AHL

  • Boy were there a lot of goals in Condor games this past week, with Bakersfield scoring 14 goals across three games. Despite the 14 goals, the Condors went 1–2–0 this past week. The Oilers AHL affiliate lost to Henderson 5–2 on the 10th, 5–4 to Tucson on the 12th, but did pick up a 8–7 overtime win against the Roadrunners the next night to finish off their chaotic week.
  • The Bakersfield Condors now have an 11–8–5 record, which puts them tied for sixth with the San Diego Gull in the AHL’s Pacific Division.
  • With Quinn Hutson now with the Oilers, Finnish forward, Viljami Marjala leads the Oilers-affiliated team in points with 23 across their 24 games. Jarventie leads the team with nine goals.
  • There’s been lots of movement for the AHL affiliate this past week.
  • Players joining include: defencemen Tyson Feist (AHL-trade), and Dru Krebs (call up from FW), while forward Samuel Poulin (PIT trade) bolsters the offence.
  • Forward Max Jones has been called up to the Oilers on the 10th, and Quinn Hutson got called-up on the 15th.
  • Defender Tyler Inamoto signed an AHL-only extension on the 10th, while fellow AHL-only forward Rem Pitlick was traded away for the previously mentioned Tyson Feist on the 14th.

ECHL

  • The Fort Wayne Komets had rough week going 1–2–0 in their three games. The Komets picked up losses on the 12th against the Kansas City Mavericks by the score of 5–4, and the 13th against the Kalamazoo Wings by that same score. Their sole win of the week came in a 4–0 shutout against Kalamazoo on the 14th.
  • The Komets still remain first in the ECHL’s Central Division with 15–6–2 record.
  • Undrafted signee James Stefan leads the club with 22 points across 23 games. It remains to be seen when the sniper will get the call-up to Bakersfield.
  • Defenders Krebs and Inamoto have both been called up to Bakersfield and no additional defenders have been signed to replace them yet.

Europe

  • 2025 sixth-round goaltender, Daniel Salonen, had a decent past week only allowing two goals on 29 shots across a start on the 12th and a relief appearance on the 13th against Ässät.

NCAA

  • Bauer Berry was one of the only active prospects for the Oilers this week in the NCAA. He was a steady defensive presence against Northern Michigan University on the 12th, and the 13th, and helped the University of St. Thomas secure back-to-back wins this week.

WHL

  • 2025 fourth-round forward, David Lewandowski, only appeared in one game this past week, and boy was he active, he had a four assist night against Moose Jaw on the 9th. Talk about one way to build momentum for his Team Germany World Juniors training camp.
  • Tommy Lafreniere had himself a solid week in a pair of games against the Prince George Cougars on the December 12 and 13, the two way forward potted three combined goals and an assist. He’s been on one of the best lines in the WHL this year with Nathan Behm and J.P. Hurlbert, who across just 31 games have posted 138 points, 58 of which are goals. Talk about driving a team’s offence.
