Edmonton Oilers prospect update: The Oilers have to make a decision on Albin Sundin soon

The Edmonton Oilers system had another busy week, with some movement in the system. As the Oilers continue to look for solutions for their depth scoring and goaltending, it is possible that management looks to the Bakersfield Condors.

Let’s review everything that happened in the Edmonton Oilers system this past week.

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.

Albin Sundin, Defence, Timra IK, (SHL)

Who is Sundin?

Sundin is an over-ager sixth-rounder selected by the Oilers 183rd overall in the 2024 NHL draft. The 2004-born defender has flip-flopped between the Allsvenskan and the SHL the past couple of years, but has finally carved out a fulltime SHL role with Timra IK this season.

Sundin’s skill set is that of a two-way defender whose game is highlighted by adequate senses, okay puck skills, and an average compete level. Some of the areas that hold the Swede back is significantly below average skating and physicality.

What does Sundin do well?

Sundin thrives as a capable breakout asset in offensive transition, with good puck skills, clear vision, and relatively quick option identification. Overall, he has decent decision-making and puck tracking ability to make him a complementary piece of any team’s transitional game.

In the offensive zone, Sundin serves more as a play supporter than a play driver with supportive positioning, spatial recognition, pressure awareness, and flashes of facilitation skill. With the puck he could be a future PP2 QB for an SHL team.

His offensive and defensive senses are decent, and reflect clear risk awareness and play anticipation, but there is a lack of engagement, which realistically mitigates any sense-based advantages.

Where does he need to improve to get more SHL minutes?

Sundin needs to improve is his skating to get more minutes in the SHL.

Some of its issues relate to a lack of explosiveness due to poor mechanics (depth, choppier stride, and extension), which harms his lateral acceleration, power, and agility. Additionally there’s a very evident lack of hip mobility, which further hampers both mechanics and speed.

These skating deficiencies hinder two major areas: his recoveries, and his activations which means he often folds under defensive pressure and coughs up turnovers.

The second major area relates to his physicality. The 2024 draftee struggles with effective hit implementation, muscle mass, and physical pressure exertion. These shortcomings make him a non-factor in board play, reduce the effectiveness of his tie-ups/boxouts, and harm his hit absorption.

These physicality limitations means he can’t get good body positioning, or leverage and results in him being a bit of a pushover in the defensive zone.

Where would he fit into the Oilers?

The Edmonton Oilers have until June 1, 2026, to decide if management wants to sign the 2004-born prospect. Sundin’s skills are still quite raw and likely require another two to three years in the SHL to develop. If he did get signed, he would likely report to the Condors or the Komets to further refine his game.

The lack of skating and physical engagement would pose significant problems on North American ice. If the Swede can prove he’s improving and a consistent play-engager in all three zones over the rest of the current SHL season, there is a chance that Sundin could be a solid top-two defender for the Condors.
