Edmonton Oilers weekly rumour update: Are Troy Stecher’s days in Edmonton numbered?

With so many different people talking about our Edmonton Oilers, it can be tricky to keep up. Each week, we here at The Oil Rig compile some of the biggest and best Edmonton Oilers rumours, news, updates, and discussions for you to keep up-to-date on all things Oilers.

This week, the boys went out on the road to St. Louis and Dallas and had a pretty forgettable road trip. There were some positive takeaways from it despite the 0-1-1 record, and a few of these storylines will impact the roster in the very near future.

Let’s get right into exploring these stories, but first, a few quick hit rumours and updates!

Troy Stecher Trade?

Another week of Troy Stecher speculation, but this time it’s coming from one of the most connected men in business in Elliotte Friedman. Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that the Oilers were trying to move out a piece and that Stecher could be that guy. In his 32 Thoughts article, he reaffirmed his belief. Stecher, at this point, is behind both Regula and Emberson in the depth chart. He’s a solid #7 in this league, making league min, a right-hand shot with tons of NHL experience. I really do think a team would pay a 6th to bring him on. Let’s see what happens, but it does look like a trade is happening sooner or later.

Another Forward Out?

Mattias Janmark’s name has been circling in the Edmonton Oilers rumour mill since July; however, David Tomasek’s name can be added to the list. Tomasek started the year on the Oilers PP1 unit but has since been relegated to the 4th line RW spot with no special teams time. Tomasek has shown in a limited time that he can be an NHLer, and I think if he goes to Bakersfield, he’ll immediately go back home overseas.

As an organization, I think it’s best to shop Tomasek around to see where the best fit for him could be in the league. I don’t even care about the return. It could be future considerations. It’d be a great look and PR image for the Oilers to do what’s right and move a player who will probably be out of the lineup when Hyman returns to a destination where he can play his best hockey.

On Janmark, Bob has cooled the waters a little on it lately, but I still don’t see where he fits in, even if they send down Howard. Time will tell, I guess!

Quick hit Edmonton Oilers updates

Alec Regula: Defenceman Alec Regula finally made his return to the lineup since being injured on a hit by Evander Kane back on October 11th. They eased him back in as he only played 13:14. Regula played super solid as he had a 79.5 xG% out there.

Zach Hyman: The forward is also close to making his return to the lineup. Knoblauch said last week Hyman could potentially return on Saturday against the Avalanche. We’ll see what news or updates break into the weekend, but it does sound and look like the Oilers will be getting Zach back very soon, a huge addition to the lineup.

Jack Roslovic: Shoutout to Jack Roslovic for a strong road trip. Scoring basically all of the Oilers’ offence with one goal and two assists. He’s been a strong fit next to Leon Draisaitl. While he will be bumped off the power play when Hyman returns, Roslovic has shown thus far that he has been an excellent fit for this group.
