Stan Bowman is wasting no time in locking down his recent trade deadline acquisition. As talks reportedly progressed during the playoff run, we have now begun to receive some details of what a contract extension for Trent Frederic will look like.
Frederic, now 27 years old, had 15 points in 58 regular season games this season to go along with four points in 22 playoff games. Of note is that he missed most of the final two months of the season due to an ankle injury. An injury he was clearly still dealing with in the playoffs.
What to expect from Trent Frederic
Us Oilers fans have yet to fully experience what Frederic can bring to the lineup. We have only seen him at a generous 75% healthy. Ideally, with a full offseason to recover and rebuild ankle strength, he will be back to his pesty, physical, and grindy self.
So far in his career, Frederic has a career high of 18 goals and 40 points, both achieved in the 2023–24 season. He had spent his entire career with the Boston Bruins until being traded to the Oilers at the recent trade deadline.
The injury was clearly affecting Frederic, as his skating speed took a nosedive in the playoffs compared to the regular season, before the injury.
Isn’t this far too much for Frederic?
We are likely in for a summer of jaw dropping contracts as players cash in on a few factors. Depth players taking longer term deals in exchange for a lower AAV (some might argue that Stan Bowman has forgotten the second half of that statement) and higher than expected AAVs as the cap is set to rise significantly in the coming years.
Frederic appears to be the first to take advantage of this.
