The Edmonton Oilers continue their unconventional signing strategy by digging into the European talent pool once again. The Oilers announced yesterday that they have signed 22-year-old Finnish forward Viljami Marjala out of TPS in the Finnish Liiga to a two-year entry level deal.
This adds to the long list of new acquisitions for the Alberta-based team this post-season. This also marks the second time in the past week that the Oilers have signed a player out of the Liiga, with Roby Jarventie also expected to play there next season prior to his deal.
Marjala’s pro career
Marjala was initially a Buffalo Sabres prospect drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL draft out of the QMJHL’s Quebec Ramparts.
That being said he’s no stranger to North American hockey playing his draft year, and draft +1 year in the QMJHL, where the offensively driven winger posted a combined 73 points across 98 games. He has since spent the last three seasons refining his game with TPS.
He has also repersented Finland internationally at the U16, U17, and U20 levels.
Viljami Marjala is showing upward development, continuously sets career highs every season. This past 2024–25 season he posted 52 points across 54 games.
Marjala continues to follow the trend of Oilers recent signing strategies by targeting older fringe prospects that are further along in their developmental curve.
Marjala’s style of play
Marjala’s game is that of a playmaker who can help push the pace of play with smart passes, offensive awareness, and slick stick handling. His skating and compete level/intensity remain the main barriers of play for the young Finn to play in the NHL.
The 6’1” forward has a ceiling as a bottom-six depth scorer for the Oilers. Expect him to compete for an NHL roster spot this upcoming season, but he will likely see a prime role on the Bakersfield Condors next year.
