The Bakersfield Condors season is over. As playoffs start to wind down for more teams, so too do the number of Edmonton Oilers prospects playing in the playoffs. Not quite as much movement has happened compared to prior weeks, but that’s to be expected as all three NHL affiliated professional leagues gear up for playoffs.
Lets take a look at this past week in prospects.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.
The Oilers prospects with the best playoff runs so far
Sam O’Reilly, C, London Knights
The 2024 first-rounder has been a spark plug for the London Knights as this playoff run proves he’s showing significant growth in terms of offensive awareness, and instincts. This offensive growth has led to him appearing on the scoresheet more, and combined with his high end compete, decent skating and quality physicality he shows the real upside of a two way forward.
The 2006-born forward is one to watch in the third round of the OHL playoffs for any Oilers fans.
Maxim Beryozkin, RW, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
We here at the Oil Rig did a prospect feature on Maxim Beryozkin last summer, and in it we highlighted his ability to compete for an NHL roster spot in the near future.
This playoff run is proof of that upside. The Russian winger continues to show more development in his offensive game, and improved pace, and offensive instincts this past season. The fifth-rounder leads Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in point production this playoff run, and thats a testament to his more complete game that he’s been playing all season.
The forward continues to show growth and this could just lead to him playing in North America next season.
Edmonton Oilers prospect updates
AHL
- The Condors have finished the season eighth in the AHL’s Pacific Division.
- They missed the final Pacific Division playoff spot due to a tiebreaker with Tuscon.
- Matthew Savoie led all prospects this year with 54 points across 66 games for the AHL squad.
- Matt Copponi recently made his Condors debut on the 16th against Abbotsford, and has since appeared in three games posting two assists. A decent showing for the NCAA product, but he was released from his Amateur Try Out (ATO) on the 20th.
- Condors defender Kyle Mayhew was also released from his PTO.
- A trio of Condors: defender Darren Brady, and forwards Alex Swetlikoff, and Ethan Keppen have been returned to the Fort Wayne Komets this past week.
- Goaltender Oliver Rodrigue and forward Derek Ryan have been recalled by the Oilers this past week in preparation for their playoff run.
ECHL
- Fort Wayne is entering Game 4 of their first round matchup against the Iowa Heartlanders. They are currently up 2–1 in the series. They lost Game 1 5–3 on the 18th, but responded with a 5–2 win on the 19th, and a 7–6 victory on the 21st. Game 4 is on the 22nd.
- Look for Oilers forward prospect James Stefan to make a mark in his rookie season in professional hockey. He has posted one goal across their series so far.
- Neither goaltenders Nathaniel Day or Connor Ungar has appeared yet, with Brett Brochu appearing in all three playoff games.
NCAA
- The USHL playoffs have started, with Oilers prospect Bauer Berry appearing in his first game on the 14th. Expect the defender to post big minutes for the Muskegon Lumberjacks. They beat the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in Round 1. Round 1 was best of three games. They playing the Youngstown Phantoms in the second round.
OHL
- Dalyn Wakely was on an 11-game playoff point streak with the Barrie Colts. This point streak ended this past Sunday in Barrie’s 3–2 OTL against Kingston. Game 7 is being played on the 22nd.
- The London Knights simply don’t know what a loss is this playoff run so far. They have clean swept Owen Sound in Round 1, and have clean swept the Erie Otters in Round 2. Sam O’Reilly has been a large factor in this success, posting a four-point game in Game 4 of the Erie series alone. He has a 1.88 PPG this playoff run so far.
Russia
- Beryozkin’s club enters a game seven against Avangard Omsk as of the 22nd. He continues to lead his team in points during this playoff run.
