Edmonton Oilers Prospects Roundup: Nathaniel Day earns a shut out, Noah Philp gets recalled

As the season momentum starts shaking there are prospects starting to heat up. Here is everything prospects within the Edmonton Oilers organization for this past week.

There is so much to get into this week- let’s dive right in!

Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is younger than 25 years of age.

Standout prospect of the week: Nathaniel Day

Good habits are the key to Nathaniel Day’s success early this season. Between his improved upchecking (goalie play reading), poise/patience Day has thrived this season with the Flint Firebirds. At Day’s base, the goaltender has a good frame, athletic upside, and ok t-pushes, and angling.

Anything in front of Day will get swallowed up, limiting high danger chances in the slot. At the same time Day does slightly struggle with posting up and perimeter shots. These difficulties with perimeter shots situations are something that can be coached out of him.

One thing that remains a concern with the young goalie is his shot tracking, and wide stance. This stance can cause issues at the NHL level, as it requires more movement leading to more lunges around the crease leading to falling behind in plays/greater athleticism, (Day has overcome these shortcomings so far at the OHL level).

Edmonton Oilers prospect updates

AHL

  • The Bakersfield Condors had a rough stretch this past week losing back-to-back games to the Tuscon Roadrunners. They now sit fourth in their division with a 2–1–2 record.
  • Matthew Savoie leads all prospects in points with one goal and three assists, good for four points. Noah Philip is not far behind with three, and looks to be getting back into pro-hockey shape after missing the 2023–24 campaign. He has also recently been called up.
  • Brady Stonehouse and Roby Järventie remained out with injury this past week.

ECHL

  • Goaltender Connor Ungar had another rough week in the ECHL, letting in six goals on 19 shots, leading to a further spike in his GAA to 7.49. As the season goes on he might find his footing.

Europe

  • 2024 sixth rounder, Albin Sundin, got loaned to second tier Swedish team AIK this past week. This comes after limited production at the SHL level.
  • Fifth-round goalie selection, Samuel Jonsson, appeared in one game this past week making 23 of 24 stops en-route to the win.

NCAA

  • Matt Copponi has started to settle in with his new club, flexing some playmaking ability with two assists in two games against the University of North Dakota, while teammate Shane Lachance posted one.
  • Mazura continues to show he is having a breakout senior season with two assists in 18:55 of ice time last friday against Penn State. Mazura then followed this up the next day against Penn State posting an assist in 21:31 of ice time, 5:22 of that being on the power play.
  • The University of Vermont Captain, Joel Maatta, posted a goal this past weekend in one of two games he played. Expect his compete level, and physicality to be the main source of his production.
  • Luca Munzenberger is back appearing in his first three games of the season, posting one assist. Expect him to be a major factor in Vermont’s defence core this year.

OHL

  • Connor Clattenburg remains out for the OHL’s Flint Firebirds.
  • London Knights forward William Nicholl continues to impress in a trio of games this past week posting as many points against Brantford, Saginaw, and Sarnia. His offensive instincts continue to grow, and mesh well with his intensity levels, and physicality.
  • 2024 first rounder Sam O’Reilly continues his pace posting three points in the last three games. He stands in sixth on team scoring for the 2024–25 campaign.
  • Dalyn Wakely continues on his upward trajectory producing three points in the past three games (Erie, Brampton, Guelph). The Colts forward has a nice mix of shooting/passing skill that compliments his more physical game.
  • 2023 second rounder, Beau Akey, played three games this past week, but particularly lit up the scoresheet against the Brampton Steelheads on friday. He hasn’t lost his excellent skating touch, expect his totals to increase as the season goes on and his offensive senses get to flourish even more.
  • Firebirds goalie, Nathaniel Day played two solid games this past week stopping 35 of 37 against the Guelph Storm on Friday, then posting a 37-save shutout versus the Owen Sound Attack the next day.

Russia

  • Maxim Beryozkin continues his KHL point streak, with two points in two games this past week. Especially notable is the fact that he only got 13-14 minutes of ice time in both of those games.
  • Denezhkin had a great weekend averaging top-six minutes (17:50 and 17:00) in two games, enroute to securing two assists.
  • Nikita Yevseyev is back with the big club in the KHL, getting called back up to Ak Bars Kazan, where he appeared in one game for 10:02 of ice time.
