Edmonton Oilers select Connor Clattenburg 160th overall with 2024 fifth-round pick

With their third selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers have selected Connor Clattenburg in the fifth round with the 160th overall pick. Clattenburg has been playing with the Flint Firebirds of the OHL most recently.

Connor Clattenburg player profile

Clattenburg is a player who has been moving around a lot these last few years. He’s played in four different leagues since 2021–22 as he continually finds his way up the ranks in juniors. He ended the 2023–24 season with the Flint Firebirds of the OHL, where he had 17 points in 30 games.

Analyzing the pick

Although not much of a scorer, Clattenburg brings size and physicality to the board. At 6’2″ and just shy of 200 pounds, the 19-year-old winger can be a force to be reckoned with. And that may be the niche he needs to find for himself to develop into the pro game.

The Oilers do not need much more in the way of offence, but they do have needs in the depth forwards, specifically in their fourth line and the physicality it sometimes lacks. A player like Clattenburg could project to be the type to fill in there.

The knock against him would be a lack of scoring. His OHL numbers are not overly impressive and it is hard to foresee them getting better or good enough to make an impact in the NHL.

What’s next for Clattenburg

Clattenburg has been on the radar of NHL teams in the past. He was invited to the Ottawa Senators Development camp in 2023. Although he may not have the skill set to make much of an impact in the near future, there is promise and need for depth players. The expectation is for him to play out his junior career and see if he has what it takes to join the AHL in due time.
