The Edmonton Oilers had a chance to make some history on Hockey Day in Canada. If they could take down the Calgary Flames, the Oilers would set the longest win streak by a Canadian team in NHL history. Three periods of Battle of Alberta hockey later, history would be set.
Edmonton sets a new record for Canada
After being the first team to reach a 12-game win streak since 2016–17, the Oilers rose up in the rankings and found themselves third in the Pacific Division. With another win, their positioning just gets a little better as the Los Angeles Kings are now chasing them instead of the other way around.
In winning their 13th straight game, Canadian NHL history would be made. No other Canadian franchise has ever won 13 games in a row.
Here are all seven Canadian franchises and their longest winning streak. The dates listed indicate the first instance of each team reaching the win streak as the Flames have two separate 10-game win streaks. The Winnipeg Jets set their own franchise record just over a week ago with an eight-game win streak.
Team | Win Streak | Date |
---|---|---|
EDM | 13 | January 20, 2024 — active |
MTL | 12 | February 3, 1968 |
OTT | 11 | February 4, 2010 |
TOR | 10 | October 28, 1993 |
VAN | 10 | November 30, 2002 |
CGY | 10 | March 13, 2017 |
WPG | 8 | January 11, 2024 |
So this list makes it pretty clear just how special this current Oilers run is. No other team in Canada has ever done this before, and it’s been 56 years since any other Canadian team had a shot of reaching 13 wins in a row.
The Oilers are now in a six-way tie for the seventh-longest streak in NHL history. Let’s so how far they can take it.
