The Edmonton Oilers had a chance to tie the franchise record with nine wins in a row, but facing off against the Tampa Bay Lightning would prove to be the limiter that prevented Edmonton from extending their win streak. The team battled and put together an insane on-ice product, but unfortunately, they got out-goalied facing one of the best goalies in the world in Andrei Vasilevskiy and it wasn’t Stuart Skinner‘s best night.
The Oilers were absolutely relentless on the puck, posting 57 total shots in the game. Only four of those would make it past Vasilevskiy, which wouldn’t be enough. Four different Oilers scored, but that would only match the individual output of Steven Stamkos, who had himself a four-goal night.
Now let’s talk about the Oilers more. Again, 57 shots in regulation is just otherworldly. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each had seven. Further, the team had 90 total shot attempts. Scroll down to the shot location chart and see just how dangerous the Oilers’ offensive game was.
A massive majority of their shot attempts came between the slot, and if it wasn’t Vasilevskiy in net, this game would have blown right open in the Oilers’ favour. Even on defence, they didn’t give up much against the Lightning in terms of quality chances. The two gargantuan displays from Stamkos and Vasilevskiy were all the Lightning needed and they trumped the Oilers’ complete team effort.
