The day the NHL has waited for this season finally came. The Connor McDavid versus Connor Bedard matchup was here. Unfortunately for many fans of the sport, the game was scheduled for an 8 p.m. MST start, meaning not as many eyes would be watching the showdown purely due to, well, it being bedtime for east-coasters.
Nevertheless, the game had major narratives across the board with two of the best Connors in the game facing off, while Edmonton had a chance to pick up their eighth straight win over the lowly Chicago Blackhawks.
The game opened with Bedard making the first move of what might be a pretty big Connor rivalry in the years to come, as he got an insane shot off while picking the far top corner to beat Stuart Skinner. However, that’d be the only time Skinner would be beaten the whole game.
For the rest of the battle, the Oilers were in control. They tied it up at the midway mark of the first and got ahead by one before the period’s end. Adding two more goals with one each in the second and third frames, the Oilers cruised to an easy 4–1 win.
The Oilers were effective in high-danger areas, where three of their goals came from within the slot, while they were also able to keep Chicago to the outside. Looking at the shot location charts below, it’s clear the Oilers executed on both ends of the ice.
The path to eight straight wasn’t easy, but they earned this one with a complete game.
