The Edmonton Oilers embarked on a West Coast road trip with high hopes but fell short in the opening game where they faced the team who’s been a big thorn in their side, the Vancouver Canucks, ultimately losing 6–2. The Oilers’ struggles persisted and their record now stands at a disappointing 2–8–1.
Early in the game, it seemed like the Oilers were poised for a strong performance, with Mattias Ekholm opening the scoring on a power play at 6:42 of the first period. The Oilers dominated the initial minutes, outshooting the Canucks 18–2, and held a 1–0 lead.
However, the tide quickly turned in the latter half of the first period. The Canucks mounted a three-goal burst in just 3:22, led by Quinn Hughes, Pius Suter, and Brock Boeser. Hughes tied the game at 1–1 with 8:30 left in the period. Suter added another goal with 6:38 remaining, and Boeser scored on a power play to make it 3-1 with 5:08 left in the period, which also stood as the game-winning goal.
Leon Draisaitl managed to cut the deficit to 3–2 at 7:38 of the second period. However, the Oilers’ recurring defensive issues came back to haunt them, allowing Nils Hoglander to restore the Canucks’ two-goal lead with 9:08 left in the second period.
The Oilers looked to get back within one goal in the third period, but a jumble in the crease led to the goal being waived due to a distinct kicking motion.
The frustration continued to mount for the Oilers in a penalty-laden final period. Draisaitl was handed a 10-minute misconduct penalty and Jay Woodcroft was also ejected from the game. It wasn’t a graceful way to bow out to the Canucks, to say the least.
