Early Sunday morning, the Edmonton Oilers announced a projected lineup for the 2023 Heritage Classic that included a Connor McDavid injury update. It is expected that he will be returning to the lineup one week after suffering an injury against the Winnipeg Jets.
Obviously, this is great news for the many fans excited to watch this outdoor edition of the Battle of Alberta. It is also fantastic news for the Oilers, who have struggled to start the 2023โ24 season.
Although it is a huge relief to see McDavid returning from injury, it is not altogether unsurprising. Coach Jay Woodcroft was consistent in mentioning McDavidโs healing abilities, as the worldโs best player has always attacked his recovery and rehabilitation with the same intensity and focus he is known for on the ice.
McDavid returning greatly improves the Oilers lineup, giving them a chance to get into the win column. For neutral observers, the entertainment quality of the event will be improved as well, as McDavidโs otherworldly talent is irreplicable. The Oilers are expected to use the following lineup:
McDavid – Draisaitl – Foegele
Kane – Nugent-Hopkins – Hyman
Holloway – McLeod – Brown
Erne – Janmark – Ryan
Ekholm – Broberg
Nurse – Ceci
Kulak – Bouchard
Desharnais
Skinner
Campbell
It is notable that McDavid is on the wing, perhaps easing him back into action. Though he has played on a line with Draisaitl, and the two superstars will negotiate responsibilities, McDavid should be free from some of the heavy lifting that centres are required to do in their own zone. This is likely a sign that McDavid is not yet at 100% health, but rather enough that he is not risking a setback or longer recovery time by playing.
