The Edmonton Oilers hosted the Winnipeg Jets in a Canadian matchup between two teams still looking to find consistent momentum. Both teams had only one win so far on the season prior to the Saturday night tilt.
The Oilers got off to a great start, scoring two goals just over six minutes into the game. An early goal less than 90 seconds into the game from Darnell Nurse was followed by a power play marker from Evan Bouchard.
However, the lead was cut in half midway through the first period as the Jets answered on the man advantage. Throughout the second it felt like there was barely any 5v5 time as the two teams traded penalties. Late in the period, the Oilers made a big gaffe courtesy of Stuart Skinner vacating his net by misplaying the puck. A wide-open net was taken full advantage of by Vladislav Namestikov to tie the game up.
With the game knotted at two apiece, a late third period injury to Connor McDavid kept him out of the remainder of the game. He remained on the bench but didn’t play in any shifts in the final minutes of the third as well as in overtime.
The Oilers were noticeably less threatening at 3v3 without McDavid as an option while the Jets were opportunistic. The game-winning goal came from Winnipeg to complete their comeback and left the Oilers to continue their season-opening rut. They are now sitting at 1–3–1 and have yet to score a third period goal at all.
