After a solid series victory against a tough team in the Los Angeles Kings, the Edmonton Oilers opened up Round 2 on the road against the Vegas Golden Knights. Stuart Skinner, hot off a Calder Trophy nomination, started in goal for the Oilers, while Laurent Brossoit started for the Golden Knights.
This first matchup was a back and forth affair. The two teams combined for a total of 10 goals, five in the first period, and five in the third. Each team scored two power play goals, and while the Oilers dominated the shot share at 37-24, the Golden Knights won the expected goals battle at 5v5. It was a tight matchup, but the Oilers ultimately fell by a score of 6-4.
It felt like the Oilers could have done more in this one. They were not particularly good at all, and definitely could have been a lot cleaner. They’ll no doubt try and improve on this in Game 2, and should put forth a much more complete effort. Vincent Desharnais had a rough game and if it wasn’t for Leon Draisaitl‘s four-goal performance, it would have been an even less fun evening. Still, after a lacklustre effort from basically the whole roster, the Oilers only lost by one goal, plus the empty netter.
No reason to panic.
