The Edmonton Oilers are thick in the Pacific Division playoff race and on the eve of 2023, they had a chance to continue playing the game of leap frog with the Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken. Win, and remain third in the Pacific; lose, and risk dropping down to a wild card spot.
Unfortunately for Edmonton, they ran into Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets. One of the league’s hottest goaltenders can steal many games and that’s exactly what happened. The Oilers were by far the better team on the ice but they were unable to score more than one goal against Hellebuyck. It didn’t help that their power play also went zero-for-five. Hellebuyck saved 31 of 32 shots.
On the other end, Jack Campbell was beaten just twice, but it happened on just 17 shots against. Those two goals was all it took for the Jets to down the Oilers as the home team walks away with a loss to close out 2022. The team will hope 2023 starts off on the right foot.
