The Edmonton Oilers faced off against the St. Louis Blues in a game that can only be described as an odd game. With both teams very much in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, it was a critical matchup that ended with a sour taste for Edmonton.
Right at the start of the game, the Oilers were awarded a power play as the Blues submitted an incorrect roster. Quickly converting on the gratuitous opportunity, Edmonton got up to an early lead just one minute into the game. However, the Blues tied it not too long after.
The Oilers regained their lead on another power play goal. Connor McDavid went end-to-end and scored on a wicked shot that was perfectly placed. With the nature of the goal being nearly a full 200-foot effort by McDavid, the secondary assist actually went to Stuart Skinner. Goalie assists are rare enough as-is, but on the power play to boot?!
Adding one more to their lead midway through the third, it looked like the Oilers were in good shape. However, the Blues quickly responded to bring the game within one goal, and then with 20 seconds remaining, they tied it up. The Oilers thought they won the game in overtime but a goal was called off due to McDavid being offside, and ultimately the Blues completed their comeback in the shootout.
Not an ideal outcome for Edmonton, but short-term memory would serve the team well. One less mistake in regulation and the no-goal call would have been non-existent. They’ll look to rebound on Saturday against the Anaheim Ducks.
