The Edmonton Oilers opened their season with a 5–3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks. New starting goaltender Jack Campbell ceded the game’s first two goals within the first three minutes, but the Oilers’ special teams answered back to bring the game to a 3–3 tie after two periods of play.
The Oilers’ fourth unanswered goal gave them their first lead of the game. Penalty issues for both teams led to late-game drama, but the Oilers hung on. McDavid scored an empty-netter for a hat trick for their first win of 2022–23.
