The “Cream of the Crop”: looking at three of the Edmonton Oilers alternate jerseys

While Connor McDavid and Team Canada are busy trying to win a Gold Medal at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Winter Games, it is time to look at just a few of the Edmonton Oilers alternate jerseys and how the team has done when wearing these sweaters.

The Oilers have had many different home, away, and alternate jerseys in their history, but today, I will be looking at their most recent Wordmark “Cream” alternate jersey, the Reverse Retro/”Mechanical Oil Drop” jersey, and lastly, their Navy Blue alternate jersey.

Some hockey fans may say that their team does not perform better in a new jersey over their main sweaters, but recently, for a lot of the other NHL teams (not just the Edmonton Oilers), they seem to play a little bit differently or maybe with some more fire in their eyes. I do not know what it is, but for me, the Oilers have crushed it in their new/alternate jerseys recently.

Starting with the “cream of the crop,” we look at the Edmonton Oilers’ most recent jersey, which was announced on September 20, 2025. Here is the announcement video.

With the new jersey announced, it was decided that the Oilers would play seven games throughout the season, starting on October 28 and ending on January 31.

October 28, 2025

The first matchup in their new jersey took place against the newest NHL team, the Utah Mammoth, and Edmonton came away with a 6–3 win. With goals from Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Mattias Ekholm, Issac Howard, and Ty Emberson, the Oilers won this game with ease.

A couple of months later, their second game happened in Seattle, where the Oilers faced the Kraken. Edmonton ended up dominating by a final score of 9–4, with a hat trick from Connor McDavid, and goals from Leon Draisaitl, Matthew Savoie, Mattias Janmark, Vasily Podkolzin, and Zach Hyman.

December 6, 2025

Just two days later, their third game was played at home at Rogers Place against the Winnipeg Jets. The Oilers dominated yet again, with a final score of 6–2. Receiving goals from Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl, Curtis Lazar, David Tomasek, Matthew Savoie, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Edmonton had now scored 21 goals in three games with the cream jersey, while only allowing nine.

A few weeks later, Edmonton was back yet again, right before Christmas, where they faced the Calgary Flames (Provincial Rivals) in the Battle of Alberta and won 5–1. With a hat trick from Leon Draisaitl and goals from Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the wins just continued to flow for the Oilers in their new jerseys.

January 12, 2026

Just a little under two weeks into the new year, the Oilers played their fifth alternate jersey game against the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago and earned a 4–1 win. Receiving goals from Evan Bouchard, Zach Hyman, and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers, in their wordmark jersey, had scored nine goals, while allowing two in their last two games.

January 13, 2026

In their second last “cream jersey” game just a day later, Edmonton found themselves playing in Smashville against the Nashville Predators. Finally, they lost 4–3 in overtime, which ended their undefeated streak. Receiving goals from Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman, that was not quite enough for them to win.

January 31, 2026

The Edmonton Oilers’ final game this season in their Wordmark “Cream” Jersey took place at home against one of the best teams in the NHL, the Minnesota Wild. This was not the way that they wanted to finish, with a 7–3 loss and getting dominated and outplayed. With goals from Jack Roslovic, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Edmonton Oilers final record in their new alternate jersey was 5–1-1. In total, they scored 36 goals and allowed 17.

Just a few years ago, the Edmonton Oilers brought back one of their jerseys from 2001 to 2007, which was the “Mechanical Oil Drop” Reverse Retro. They played approximately five games in this jersey throughout the 2022–23 season, and it is very cool to bring back an iconic jersey from your history and show it off today.

November 16, 2022

The first matchup in their Reverse Retro jersey took place against the Los Angeles Kings, where Edmonton unfortunately lost by a final score of 3–1. The only Oilers goal of the game came off the stick of Zach Hyman, not a good start in a new alternate jersey.

December 15, 2022

Almost one month later, the Oilers Reverse Retros were back again, this time against the St. Louis Blues at Rogers Place. With another loss, the Blues were able to win this game 4–3 in the shootout. Receiving goals from Connor McDavid, Kailer Yamamoto, and Zach Hyman, three goals is all Edmonton could muster up in this game.

December 31, 2022

A few weeks later, right before the start of the new year, Edmonton faced off at home again against the Winnipeg Jets. With yet another loss, only one goal was scored before the game ended 2–1 in favor of the Jets. Klim Kostin scored the lone goal for the Oilers, who, in three games played, allowed nine goals and scored five.

January 25, 2023

Starting the new year in the alternate jersey, Edmonton was at Rogers Place facing off against the Columbus Blue Jackets, where they lost yet again, but this time, 3–2 in overtime. With Derek Ryan and Zach Hyman scoring the only two goals, the losses continued to pile up in their new Reverse Retro jersey.

January 28, 2023

To end their run in the “Mechanical Oil Drop” jersey, the Oilers finally dominated and had a strong game against the Chicago Blackhawks, thanks to a 7–3 win. Receiving goals from Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Ryan McLeod, Tyson Barrie, and Evander Kane, the team finally decided to show up and play to win. Edmonton’s final record in this alternate jersey was 1–2–2. In total, they scored 14 goals and allowed 15.

The final alternate jersey that I will be looking at is the one that the Edmonton Oilers wore for almost every home game in the 2021–22 season as their primary sweater. In their Navy Blue alternate jersey, the Oilers played approximately 41 games in the regular season and eight in the playoffs.

Because Edmonton liked the look and probably the feel of this jersey so much, they officially wore the Navy Blue as only an alternate in the 2022–23 and 2023–24 seasons.

Oilers Fans! I know that the Edmonton Oilers have had plenty more alternate or special jerseys over the years, but which one is your favourite? Whether it is one of these three or a different one, let us know in the comments below.
