There’s been a lot of movement in the Edmonton Oilers system in the past week or so. There’s also been mixed results at the minor league levels with stalling team performances, but also lots of individual growth. The Oilers’ roster management and developmental model certainly is interesting.
Just like a roller coaster, there was a lot of up and down movement in the system this week.
Welcome to the TOR Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Oilers’ prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.
Quinn Hutson, Forward, Bakersfield Condors
The North Barrington Illinois product was one of the highest profile college free agents last season. The Oilers were able to nab the Boston University Terrier with an enticing signing bonus of burning off a year of his ELC early by playing two games with the Oilers at the end of the NHL campaign
He was also a possible contender to make the Oilers out of training camp this year, but after a sluggish start to the 2025–26 season, the 2002-born sniper looks to have found his groove at the AHL level.
Hutson is a classic sniper-playmaker combo, where he derives his value from the pure offence he generates. Overall, his game is highlighted by a strong motor, with higher end offensive senses, and shooting ability, and passing skill.
What is going on with Hutson right now?
Simply put, Hutson has adjusted to the pace of play well with Bakersfield. This means that his play reading, processing, and overall hockey IQ have “levelled up” to the professional ranks. For every college free agent, professional hockey is a beast that takes time to adjust to its speed, and minute details.
The most noticeable adjustment period is typically for NCAA goalies, as college hockey all-stars Owen Say, and Arsenii Sergeev prove. This adjustment period is alos evident in offensive forwards, as former prized NCAA signings like Jimmy Vesey and Spencer/Parker Foo could never fully make this adjustment.
This offensive adjustment and realization that what worked at the NCAA level might not work at the professional ranks is exactly what Oilers prospect Isaac Howard is in the middle of figuring out as well.
The NCAA is not the NHL or the AHL, so for many young players, there are metaphorical speedbumps they need to get over.
For Boston University alumnus Hutson, it is evident that he has adjusted his playmaking game to the AHL level. This is especially important because the sniper has clear skating limitations that make his playmaking style, option ID, and lane recognition in his play scans even more important.
What’s next for Hutson?
The American-born forward has been extremely hot in the past two weeks or so, posting five assists and four goals in just nine games. The next step for Hutson’s NHL development would be finding more consistency as the season goes on.
Additionally, while his hockey senses, puck skills, and compete have all transitioned nicely, further improvements to his skating in terms of posture, power, and acceleration could make him a larger threat in transitional hockey.

AHL
- The Bakersfield Condors went 1–2–0 this past week. Bakersfield lost to the Coachella Firebirds 6–3 on November 11, they then followed this up with a 4–3 loss on November 14 against San Diego. The Condors then turned it around and got revenge on Coachella, collecting a 6–3 win against them on the 15th.
- Bakersfield now falls to eighth in the Pacific Division with a 6–5–3 record.
- Goaltending veteran, Matt Tomkins, has run away with the starter’s job recently after starting four of the last five Condors games.
- Condors forward Quinn Hutson has performed well recently and is currently on a four-game point streak, posting nine points across that span.
- Beau Akey and Isaac Howard were both recently assigned to the Condors. Both players found the scoresheet with Akey posting a single assist, and Howard posting a pair of assists in their AHL debut on the 15th.
ECHL
- Fort Wayne played two games this past week, and collected a win and a loss. The secured a 5–3 victory against the Kalamazoo Wings on the 14th, and dropped a close 2–1 loss to Toledo on the 15th.
- The Komets are 8–3–0, and still sit at first in the ECHL’s Central division.
- Nathaniel Day and Samuel Jonsson split the game, with Day playing the game against Kalamazoo and Jonsson playing against Toledo.
- James Stefan now leads Oiler’s signed prospects in Fort Wayne with six goals and three assists across 11 games.
- Beau Akey has been called up to the Condors from the Komets after injuries and losing Troy Stetcher on waivers.
Europe
- Petr Hauser was called up to HC Vitkovice this past week and appeared in another two games with the top club. He found the back of the net in his first game back in the top league on 12th against Motor Ceske Budejovice.
NCAA
- Paul Fischer and Notre Dame appeared in a pair of games against Michigan State. Despite Notre Dame only posting two goals combined, Fischer found the scoresheet in both games with a goal on the 14th and an assist on the 15th.
- Dalyn Wakely ran into some discipline issues this past week and collected three penalties across two games. UMass Lowell lost 7–1 to Union College on the 14th, and lost 2–0 to RPI the following day.
WHL
- 2025 third rounder, Tommy Lafreniere, continues to build a more complete game, as the two-way forward is now over a point per game this season in the WHL and continues to build his point streak. The Canadian forward played in Edmonton on the 11th, Prince George on the 14th, and Lethbridge on the 15th. Lafreniere now has 10 points across seven games.
- Lewandowski had a busy past week playing three games. That being said, the power forward now has a three-game point streak as well. He played Swift Current on the 11th, Calgary on the 14th, and Red Deer on the 15th. The Saskatoon Blades are also now on a three-game win streak.
Russia
- The 2019 seventh rounder, Nikita Yevseyev continues to be a solid addition on Amur Khabarovsk’s blueline. The defender plays a two-way transitional playstyle defined by strong skating, okay puck skills, and top-end physicality. The Russian defender remained a consistent third-pairing presence in their games on the 11th, and 16th this past week.
- Maxim Beryozkin’s momentum has more or less halted this season, and remains a middle-six forward for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Expect the Russian forward to likely stay in the KHL next season. He appeared in games on the 12th, 15th, and 17th this past week. Beryozkin found the scoresheet in the first game on the 12th against Spartak Moskva in a 6–3 victory.
