Edmonton Oilers

The week ahead for the Edmonton Oilers: the lead up to a familiar matchup

The Edmonton Oilers finished their two-game homestead with a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets 5–4 in overtime. Two highlight goals were scored, and some of the Oilers’ set systems seem to be coming together right now. Especially for their two superstars, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

With three wins and one loss, let us look at how the week’s games played out.

How this week’s games played out

Columbus Blue Jackets at Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers finished their quick two-game homestead with a win before heading on a seven-game road trip. This game was dominated by the Blue Jackets, as they held a 4–2 lead over the Oilers just over four minutes into the third period. Edmonton, like they do best, was able to score a few goals in the third and tie the game up at four apiece. Into overtime they went.

The Oilers, of course, were able to win the game 5–4, which is not surprising when you look at how the team played in the third period of the game. Although Edmonton outshot Columbus 9–6 in the third and 2–1 in overtime, they still only managed to get 24 shots and were able to earn the win in this game.

The Oilers received two goals from defenceman Jake Walman and two goals from their captain, Connor McDavid. Jack Roslovic would end up playing hero in this one, with the game-winner.

Edmonton Oilers at Philadelphia Flyers

Next up on the week, the Oilers were now heading on the road to play seven consecutive games away from Rogers Place and Edmonton. For the Oilers, this game was way too close for comfort, especially when you look at who they were playing against that night and where they are ranked in the league standings.

Edmonton, in a similar fashion to the game on November 10, won the game by a final score of 2–1. You guessed it, the Oilers won the game in overtime, thanks to a familiar name: Jack Roslovic. Edmonton shot and took a lot more chances in this game, with a shot counter of 31–21.

The Oilers received the game’s opening goal, with 55 seconds remaining in the first period, thanks to defenceman Evan Bouchard. The Flyers were able to tie up the game in the second period and no goals were scored in the third frame. Jack Roslovic played hero yet again, with his second consecutive game-winning goal in overtime.

Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets

Game three in week six and the second game of their seven-game road trip saw the Oilers go head-to-head against the Blue Jackets, after beating them 5–4 in overtime, only four days ago. Columbus started this game on the right foot, as they were able to come out to a 2–0 lead, which the Oilers were able to tie up, thanks to two goals in a minute and 40 seconds. 30 seconds later, the Blue Jackets would take a 3–2 lead and did not look back.

Edmonton outshot Columbus 29–25, but could not find a way to score and take the lead after tying up the game in quick succession. The Oilers received goals from Matthew Savoie and Vasily Podkolzin, and Leon Draisaitl managed to score two goals himself. I guess that Draisaitl scoring those two goals and his twelfth of the season was still not enough for Edmonton to earn a win. Leon Draisaitl earned himself the third star of this game.

Edmonton Oilers at Carolina Hurricanes

The fourth game of week six and final of the week as well, saw the Oilers continue their road trip against one of the best Eastern teams in the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes. The ‘Canes currently sit at 25 points and second in the Metropolitan Division with a 12–5–1 record through their first 18 games. At this time, Edmonton had 20 points and was sitting fourth in the Pacific Division with an 8–7–4 record through its first 19 games.

With the Carolina Hurricanes being very good at getting a large amount of shots on net every game, they were able to outshoot the Oilers 36–23. For the third time this week and the third time in four games, the game ended up going into extra time, with Edmonton coming out on top, yet again.

The Oilers managed to get a 2–0 lead, but like the storyline has been all season long so far, Carolina was able to tie the game, and at the time, there were still approximately 38 minutes left to play. Edmonton won this game 4–3 and received their goals from Connor McDavid (X2), Leon Draisaitl (X1), and Jack Roslovic (X1). McDavid and Draisaitl were the first and second stars of the game.

Edmonton Oilers at Buffalo Sabres, Monday, November 17

The Oilers’ first game of week seven is going to take place on the road against one of the worst teams in the NHL, and a team that currently sits 29th in the league, the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres for basically as long as I have been watching NHL hockey, have consistently struggled to make the playoffs and win games. The last time that Buffalo made the playoffs was in 2011, when they ended up losing in seven games to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Buffalo Sabres, again, are off to a very rough start this season, as they currently find themselves sitting at .444, with a 6–8–4 record through their first 18 games of the season, which currently finds them 29th across the entire league. This should not come as a surprise, as Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch currently sitting tied for the team lead in points, with 16 each. Thompson currently has eight goals and eight assists, while Tuch currently has seven goals and nine assists himself.

Edmonton Oilers at Washington Capitals, Wednesday, November 19

The Oilers’ second game of regular season week seven will see them match up against a team that, at the moment, finds itself sitting eighth in the Eastern wild card scoring and currently out of playoff contention. The Washington Capitals were a really impressive team last season, and with the way that this year has been going so far,

Edmonton should realistically be able to win this game. With the way that both teams have played up to this point, it is very hard to determine who could earn a win.

Last season, the Oilers finished with no wins and two losses, thanks to a single loss at home and a single loss on the road. On January 21, 2025, the Oilers got outplayed and ended up losing the game by a final score of 3–2. Again, on February 23, 2025, the Capitals lit up the Oilers and ended up dominating the game by a final score of 7–3.

When you look at Washington’s roster and the age of some of their players, you will probably find this very interesting and surprising. Tom Wilson, who is currently 31 but known as one of the Capitals’ goon players, currently leads the team with 17 points through his first 18 games (nine goals and eight assists).

Edmonton Oilers at Tampa Bay Lightning, Thursday, November 20

The Oilers’ third game of week seven and sixth (second last) of their newest seven-game road trip will see them match up against the Tampa Bay Lightning. At the moment, Tampa currently sits fifth in the Eastern wild card standings, with a 9–7–2 record and 20 points through their first 18 games of the season.

Last season, the Oilers finished with one win and one loss, thanks to a single win at home and a single loss on the road. On December 10, 2024, the Oilers outplayed the Lightning and ended up winning the game by a final score of 2–1. Again, on February 25, 2025, Tampa was able to take control over Edmonton in this game and ended up dominating with a final score of 4–1. What may come as a surprise to quite a few NHL fans is that Jake Guentzel, who is currently 31 years old, leads the team with eight goals and nine assists for 17 points through his first 18 games.

Edmonton Oilers at Florida Panthers, Saturday, November 22

All of the emotions for the players and fans alike will all come rushing back when this game takes place. The final game of the road trip and fourth game of the week will see the Oilers go head-to-head against the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers. At the moment, Florida currently sits seventh in the Eastern wild card standings, with a 9–8–1 record and 19 points through their first 18 games of the season.

Last season, the Oilers finished with no wins and two losses, thanks to a single loss at home and a single loss on the road. On December 16, 2024, this game was back and forth and saw goals galore, with Florida winning the game by a final score of 6–5. Again, on February 27, 2025, more goals were scored by both teams, with the Panthers taking another win by a final score of 4–3.

The Florida Panthers’ oldest player, at 37 years old, is currently leading the team in points. Brad Marchand, most well-known as “The Rat,” has 12 goals and nine assists for 21 points through his first 17 games of the season. 12 goals in 17 games at 37 is a very impressive feat.

After this past week of games, it seems like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are slowly starting to get to that constant dominance we know that they can bring night in and night out. McDavid is currently on an eight-game point streak with six goals and 10 assists for a total of 16 points. He is crushing it, averaging two points per game in that span. Draisaitl is currently on a two-game point streak with three goals and two assists for a total of five points. He is crushing it as well, averaging 2.5 points per game in that stretch of games.

Oilers fans! Let me know what your thoughts are on the week ahead!
