The minor league affiliates of the Edmonton Oilers are starting to build real momentum for the 2025–26 campaign. The Oilers’ NCAA prospects continue to find their footing as the majority of their freshman class of players become more comfortable at the next level of their development.
Welcome to the Oil Rig Edmonton Oilers prospect update. Each week, we delve into how the Oilers’ prospects have performed in their respective leagues, accompanied by a feature on one standout prospect in Edmonton’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and was born in 2001 or earlier.
Petr Hauser: Forward from Czechia
The 2003-born prospect was initially drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fifth round of the 2022 draft. Hauser was then acquired by the Oilers as a throw-in from the Boston/New Jersey trades on March 4, 2025 that also included Trent Frederic and Max Jones.
If the name sounds unfamiliar, it’s largely because he has played his entire career in Czechia for Sparta Praha, Plzen HC, and Vitkovice HC since his draft year. At 6’4″, he plays a playmaker’s game with some elements of a power forward.
His game is highlighted by strong puck skills, decent timing and elements of physicality and compete.
All of that being said, Hauser has had a tumultuous 2025–26 campaign in Czechia. This uncertainty is due to the forward being the main candidate with Vitkovice to be sent down to their minor league in Czechia2. When he is up in the top league, it’s mostly as a bottom-six forward with limited TOI.
What does Hauser do well?
The soft-skill forward has quality puck skills that allow him to be a smooth handler, with decent enough vision and passing to get the puck where it needs to be. He shows safe decision-making and a good frame, plus body positioning to absorb hits while implementing solid puck protection mechanics.
His puck skills and physicality blend well with his senses around timing, play anticipation, positioning, and space creation. Hauser also thrives down low as a play supporter as well, and can generate supportive offensive pressure. In short, he’s a classic hockey wing-man.
Why is Hauser struggling this season then?
Hauser shows limited effectiveness as he doesn’t use his 6’4″ frame to its full ability reducing his grit, board play ability, and hitting effectiveness. This lack of hard skill compounds and makes his average motor even less noticeable as Hauser lacks defensive engagement in plays.
In the offensive zone, Hauser is more of a supporter than a creator. The European forward knows where to be on the ice, but struggles to recognize options and create on his own, which hints at below average offensive instincts at the professional level.
Additionally, there are two major drawbacks Hasuer has not improved since his draft year. His skating displays limited hip flection mixed with a shuffle-esque stride, which leads to lackluster acceleration. And secondly, he has a stiff shot with limited leverage, elevation, and power.
In short, his skillset looked good for the junior level, but through his ineffectiveness in play creation, mixed in with limited growth in key areas since his draft year, the Czechia-born forward has struggled to build momentum leading to him currently playing in Czechia2 with Berani Zlin.
Final thoughts on Hauser
Hauser is a prospect the Oilers have to decide if they are going to sign by June 1, 2026. With Hauser’s current role and struggles it would be unlikely that Edmonton signs him, but if they do, expect him to be AHL depth or NHL bottom-six in the event of injuries.
