In what is yet another massive accomplishment for the Oilers’ captain, Connor McDavid has officially hit 1100 career NHL points. This season, he has passed Theo Fleury already on the all-time point list, and now passes Glenn Anderson to record point number 1100.
His 1100th point came as a secondary assist on a goal by Jack Roslovic at the 18:38 mark of the game against the St Louis Blues. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got the other assist.
The road to 1100 career points for McDavid
Now in his 11th NHL season, the 28-year-old has risen through the NHL scoring ranks at an astounding rate. He has hit 100 points or more every single season except for the Covid-19 shortened 2019–20 season, in which he recorded 97.
Only eight active NHLers sit ahead of him in the scoring race: Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Patrick Kane, Anze Kopitar, Steven Stamkos, Claude Giroux, and John Tavares. The commonality? They are all much older than him.
While not his most blistering start, McDavid is up to 17 points in 13 games, and should record another 80 or so points before the season is over. If this pace continues, he should pass both Tavares and Giroux, as well as legends Frank Mahovlich, Darryl Sittler, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Bossy, Bernie Federko, Marian Hossa, Niklas Lidstron, Michel Goulet, and Daniel Alfredsson. With a bit of luck, he may also pass Bobby Hull and Rod Brind’Amour this season.
While it’s hard to see him, or frankly anyone, catching Wayne Gretzky, if he continues to put up 100-point seasons for the next decade, he could pass Jaromir Jagr for second all-time in scoring. The Czech great sits at 1921 points.
Two of the top-five all-time point producers in the league are former Oilers in Gretzky and Mark Messier. It’s not hard to imagine McDavid in that group when it’s all said and done.
But for now, 1100 is an enormous accomplishment. Congrats, Connor!
