The Edmonton Oilers extend defenceman Cam Dineen on a two-year contract, reportedly extending Calvin Pickard

On the first day of the 2024 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers got to work with contracts and are working on contract extensions. The team announced a two-year contract for defenceman Cam Dineen with an average annual value of $775K.

Further, Kevin Weekes reported that the team is also set to extend goaltender Calvin Pickard on a two-year extension.

Dineen’s career so far

Dineen was a 2016 draft pick, selected 68th overall by the Arizona Coyotes. Before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline, Dineen was traded to Edmonton in a package that also included Nick Bjugstad, while the Oilers sent a 2023 third-round pick and prospect Michael Kesselring back to Arizona.

Dineen played 58 games with the Bakersfield Condors in 2023–24, where he posted five goals and 20 assists. He could be poised to slot into a few Oilers games the upcoming season.

Pickard gets an extension

As Weekes reported, the contract extension for Pickard is also two years. The goaltender was fine in his backup role for the Oilers and slotted into playoff games while Stuart Skinner was not up to par. Pickard played his role near perfectly as he provided stability between the pipes while the Oilers looked to get their starter going—and it worked.

Pickard’s coming off of a two-year contract he signed with the Oilers worth $762.5K. Frank Seravalli is reporting on the value and has it coming it at $1.0M per year.

Let the offseason begin

The Oilers barely have any downtime between their playoff run and getting ready for the next season. This offseason should be interesting for the team, which started with the departure of Ken Holland, momentum garnering on Leon Draisaitl’s extension, and more.

Right now, however, the team has to focus on the draft, and Day 2 is when they’ll start making their moves. Stay tuned for The Oil Rig’s Oilers draft coverage!
